McClellan reportedly top candidate to replace Thompson at HHS

Administration officials tell The Wall Street Journal that Mark McClellan, head of the HHS agency overseeing Medicare, is at the top of the list to succeed outgoing Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson. While such an appointment would come at a time when the HHS is trying to implement the new prescription drug benefit law, the officials said McClellan would stay heavily involved in the drug benefit program even if he is elevated to health secretary.
