Yesterday, the Institute of Medicine, a division of the National Academy of Sciences, issued a report that cited "strong evidence" that the use of popular cartoon characters to promote food products to children can lead to childhood obesity. In a release issued in the wake of the report, American Advertising Federation president and CEO Wally Snyder wrote, "There seems to be little recognition in the IOM report of what the industry has been accomplishing" in terms of self-regulation and the promotion of healthy diet and regular exercise.
