Dr. Alessio Fasano and his colleagues at Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine believe that celiac disease is often overlooked by doctors because its symptoms vary so widely. Fasano led the development of a simple blood test that detects celiac disease, and he and hopes, with his team, to create a pill that would enable patients to digest gluten rather than cutting it from their diets completely, which is the current standard treatment.
