Net-zero energy building requires careful calculations

12/7/2009 | Wall Street Journal, The

Architects, engineers and scientists hope a structure now under construction by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory will not need to draw a single electron from the energy grid. They have tweaked the design of the net-zero building multiple times and spent hundreds of hours calculating its energy use. The building, rather than its occupants, will control much of the environment, such as opening windows and turning on overhead lights.
