Spreading out of HSR funds criticized at hearing:

Republicans criticized how federal funds for high-speed rail were given out and suggested that the Northeast Corridor should have been the major recipient of the funds since 20% of the U.S. population lives along that line, which accounts for half of all Amtrak passengers. "If we’re really serious about getting high-speed rail, we need to find one place in the country to do it right, spend the money to do it right, learn from it and take it to other corridors that will emerge in the future," said Railroads Subcommittee Chairman Bill Shuster, R-Pa. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said, "We won't just invest every dollar in one part of the country. It's just not fair."
