Variable annuities cast a shadow over insurers

ING Group saw its share price fall Wednesday as it took a $1.34 billion charge to cover higher variable-annuities liabilities, and it's likely not the only insurer that will feel pain from the product, Hester Plumridge writes. More customers are opting for annuities' guaranteed rates of return, an expensive option for insurers in an extremely low-interest-rate environment.
