Study: Merit pay improves student test scores

A merit pay plan introduced in England a few years ago was responsible for raising students' progress on the General Certificate of Secondary Education by about half a grade per pupil per subject, concludes a study by Bristol University researchers. The National Union of Teachers rejected the findings by noting that children are influenced not only by their current teachers but by past ones, as well.
