Federal official: Hawaii teacher furloughs are the wrong approach

A U.S. Department of Education official criticized Hawaii officials' decision to furlough the state's teachers to save money. Peter Cunningham, assistant secretary for communications and outreach, said during a visit that federal officials do not want to tell Hawaii how to operate, but furloughs reflect poorly on the state. Cunningham said parents should use the furloughs as an opportunity to push for improving education.
