Green groups claim that basic gas-exploration techniques are unsafe

Environmentalists say that they will use next month's meeting of the Delaware River Basin Commission to question the safety of several basic drilling technologies used by shale-exploration companies. While much of the safety debate has been about hydraulic fracturing, some groups claim that other techniques, such as deep vertical drilling and exploratory drilling, are also potentially unsafe. "Any drilling activities, vertical or horizontal, that take place in shale-rock formations pose significant risks to human health and the environment," the groups argue.
