The 10nm frontier: Changes are in store for IC gear, materials

12/8/2011 | DigiTimes

Manufacturing semiconductors with linewidths of 10 nanometers and smaller is expected to pose a number of challenges for IC production equipment and materials, this post notes. One is a financial issue; extreme-ultraviolet lithography systems, which will be needed for that process generation, may cost as much as $100 million, limiting their purchasers to the biggest chipmakers, such as Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.
