Analysis: U.S. economy keeps gaining strength

A long list of indicators point to steady improvement in the U.S. economy, and the risk of a double-dip recession is greatly diminished, according to The Economist. That progress could be lost if Congress allows the government to shut down next week over funding disagreements or does not extend the payroll-tax cut. "With another self-induced wound, last August's forecasts of a seasonal recession would turn out to have been early rather than wrong," the magazine notes.
