Survey: Teachers say testing pushes some subjects to the margins

About two-thirds of teachers who participated in a recent survey said the focus on high-stakes testing in reading and math has lessened the focus on other subjects, such as social studies, art and science. Many teachers also responded that their schools now devote additional time to teaching students how to take tests. While teachers report a narrowing of the curriculum, some also have found the focus on English and math has helped improve students' achievement in those subjects.
