The CMS has extended the attestation period for stage 2 EHR meaningful use through 2016 so the agency and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT can help providers satisfy the interoperability, data exchange and patient engagement requirements. The extension will also move the start of stage 3 until at least fiscal year 2017. "We're continuing to move forward aggressively ... and yet we are recognizing it's going to take additional time to get ready for stage 3 and we wouldn't have the time to do that if we didn't extend stage 2," said Dr. Jacob Reider, acting head of the ONC.
