Global bioplastics demand is expected to surge, study says

Demand for bio-based plastics will increase worldwide by 19% each year to 960,000 metric tons in 2017, according to a Freedonia Group analysis. "Robust growth in demand is expected in virtually all geographic markets" because of consumer preferences and increased uses for the materials, said Freedonia analyst Kent Furst. Despite the surge, bioplastics resins will make up less than 1% of the global plastic resin market by 2022, the report says.
