Oklahoma commissions columns to shield bridges

The Oklahoma Transportation Commission has awarded Jensen Construction a $15 million contract to build what will be the nation's first extensive system of columns to shield bridges on inland waterways. The action comes after a 2002 incident in which a barge slammed into a pier supporting an Interstate 40 bridge spanning the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, causing a section of the bridge to collapse.
