L.A. superintendent agrees to step down

Amid attempts by some Los Angeles school board members to unseat superintendent David L. Brewer, who is in the middle of a four-year contract, he announced Monday that he would accept a buyout of his contract. Senior deputy superintendent Ramon C. Cortines, a former advisor to Brewer critic Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, is expected to become interim superintendent.
