Lawmaker reaffirms support for FDA power over new-drug ads

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said he plans in January to reopen discussions on giving the FDA authority to prohibit direct-to-consumer ads for new drugs, which may carry risks that are not yet fully understood. Waxman, who is set to become chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee next year, said the proposal "makes a great deal of sense and can provide FDA an important tool to protect the public health."
