Most Asian markets overcome selling pressure to close higher

Although data confirmed that Japan is in recession, Tokyo led most regional markets to gains Tuesday. The Nikkei 225 Average climbed 0.8% after rising as high as 2.1% in early trading. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.8%, Singapore's Straits Times Index soared 5.3% and Indonesia's JSX Composite advanced 3.9%. Malaysia's KLSE Composite inched up 0.4%, Taiwan's Taiex gained 1.2%, South Korea's Kospi eked out a 0.1% gain and New Zealand's NZX 50 Index rose 0.9%. Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped 1.9%, and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index slid 1.7%.
