Baltimore school's music initiative receives grant toward expansion

Philanthropists have pledged $1 million to expand a popular music program at an urban Baltimore school. About 150 students from pre-K through second grade participate in OrchKids -- an initiative begun last year by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra -- which provides year-round classroom instruction in music twice a week as well as after-school classes four days a week. The grant will pay 50% of the program's expenses over the next four years, allowing for more instruments to be purchased, more staff to be hired and additional grades.
