GAO finds no change in FDA's policy on monitoring drug safety

A report by the Government Accountability Office shows that the FDA still depends on scientists for major drug-safety decisions three years after experts recommended changing the agency's policy on monitoring drug safety. The FDA said its new-drug division still handles such decisions because it has "staff with the broadest expertise and experience" on product safety compared with the Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology, which was recommended by the GAO.
