McChrystal says capturing bin Laden crucial to al-Qaida defeat

Top U.S. commander in Afghanistan Gen. Stanley McChrystal said al-Qaida will not be defeated until terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden is captured or killed -- an assessment echoed by U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry. McChrystal said the additional troop deployment approved by U.S. President Barack Obama and their efforts during the next 18 months would be crucial to defeating the Taliban and al-Qaida, but he noted the latter could not be eliminated without also capturing bin Laden.
