Analysis: States award high-end pensions to a wider range of jobs

Special state pensions that were once reserved for those with dangerous jobs are being awarded to a much longer list of workers, according to a USA TODAY analysis. The enhanced benefits, available in some states to positions such as lifeguards, highway laborers and park rangers, include early retirement and higher-than-normal pension payments. The trend is adding to the nearly $70 billion that state residents pay toward public pensions annually.
