Industry advances FLEX program for nuclear incidents

The U.S. nuclear energy industry is expanding a program designed to meet the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's post-Fukushima Daiichi rules for facilities. Under the FLEX program, regional centers will be constructed in Phoenix and Memphis, Tenn., that could deliver additional emergency equipment to affected sites. "It became very clear in Japan that utilities became quickly overwhelmed," said Joe Pollock, the Nuclear Energy Institute's vice president for nuclear operations.
