$2.3B plan to expand interstates in Mich. advances

The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments Commission voted 24-7 on Friday to advance a $2.3 billion proposal to expand two stretches of Interstates 75 and 94 that serve Detroit and its suburbs. Work on I-75 could begin in 2016, while construction on I-94 could start in 2018. The project includes constructing an extra lane on each highway, overpass replacements and interchange improvements. However, critics contend the additional lanes would contribute to urban sprawl and further exodus from Detroit.
