Doctors link increasing IBD to genetics, environment

Gastroenterologists are seeing an increase in the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease and say the cause may include genetics and an overly clean environment with fewer bacteria. Dr. Marc Schaefer at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center said scientists have yet to find a microorganism to isolate the environmental component and Dr. F. Wilson Jackson at Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology said something in the environment may "flip on the switch" and cause IBD in those with a genetic predisposition.
