U.K. proposes to double-count biofuels' contribution to EU renewables goal

The U.K. is recommending that the EU count the contribution of biofuels both toward the overall 2020 renewable energy target and the transportation sector target, documents showed. According to the U.K.'s estimate, the plan would cut the EU's 20% overall renewable energy target to 19.6%, resulting in a potential savings of $7.4 billion on investments that would have been directed on renewables. The plan was received favorably by some member states but not Germany, diplomats said.
