Columnist predicts Denver superintendent for education secretary

Denver Superintendent Michael Bennet has been named by Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter as a likely pick by President-elect Barack Obama for secretary of education, in part for his well-known efforts to collaborate with a local teachers union on the issue of merit pay. Bennet, who has been Denver's superintendent since 2005, worked to raise salaries of new teachers and offer bonuses to those who worked in struggling schools.
