NBPTS to launch principal certification to develop school leadership

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards announced this week that it will soon offer a certification program for school principals -- similar to its 20-year-old rigorous National Board Certification for teachers. Joseph A. Aguerrebere, NBPTS executive director, said teachers were a main motivator for developing standards for principals -- an effort endorsed by Education Secretary Arne Duncan. "I think many of our teachers support this effort and are saying, in so many words, 'Give me a principal who gets it, and I will go work for them anywhere,'" Aguerrebere said.
