AIChE paper promotes potential of synthetic fuel

Synthetic fuels from natural gas, coal and nonfood crop sources could end the need for the U.S. to import oil over 40 years' time and potentially halve greenhouse-gas emissions, according to a paper by the American Institute for Chemical Engineers written by Vern Weekman, a past president of AIChE. "Even including capital costs, synthetic fuels can still be profitable. These processes are competitive," said Richard Baliban.
