Age, disease duration affect morbidity in type 2 diabetes

A report in JAMA Internal Medicine revealed that age and disease duration played key roles in hypoglycemia and other complications in type 2 diabetes patients. Researchers examined 72,310 patients and found hypoglycemic events ranged between 3 per 1,000 person-years in youngest patients with the shortest disease duration to 19.6 per 1,000 person-years among the oldest patients with the longest disease duration, which suggest that intensive glucose control may not yield benefits in the latter group.
