Dermatologists: Remove makeup correctly to avoid skin damage

Using harsh products or methods to remove makeup, or not removing makeup at all before going to sleep, can cause breakouts and damage sensitive skin, dermatologic surgeons say. Using baby oil to remove makeup can irritate skin, says ASDS member Dr. Jeanine Downie, and some surfactants and emulsifiers in makeup removers can stay on the skin and irritate it if not washed off, ASDS member Dr. Susan Stuart said. Eye makeup left on overnight can cause puffy, irritated eyes and should be removed gently with an eye makeup remover, which should then be washed off, ASDS member Dr. David Bank says.
