German President Joachim Gauck has announced that he will not attend the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, citing the country's anti-LGBT "propaganda" laws and abuses against its LGBT citizens. Gauck, a former pastor who has held the largely ceremonial total since 2012, informed Russian officials last week of his decision. The decision makes Gauck the first major political figure to boycott the Olympics publicly. German Chancellor Angela Merkel ruled out a boycott earlier this year.
