Iowa second-grade educators and students -- working in two schools 140 miles apart -- collaborated on a recent literacy project using Google Hangouts. Teacher-librarians, who first met through Twitter, created the Picture Book Month project by using the group video call program to take turns reading the same book and students worked on real-time online projects together, such as drawing illustrations. "We really wanted to break down the walls of the school, because technology is changing the way students are learning," said Sarah Staudt, a teacher-librarian at Harding Elementary School.
