Mary Barra becomes the first female CEO at a major car maker

General Motors has become the first major U.S. automotive company to name a female CEO, announcing the appointment of insider Mary Barra to the position. Barra, who has been with GM for 33 years, will take over from departing CEO Dan Akerson in January. Statistics show women make up less than one-quarter of the auto industry workforce.
