California Assembly elects out Latino speaker

John Perez, a first-term Democratic lawmaker in California, will become the first openly gay speaker of the state Assembly. "To have an openly gay Latino heading the largest legislative body, that represents the most people in the country, in and of itself is going to have a significant impact on advancing LGBT rights," said Geoff Kors, director of Equality California.
