South Los Angeles rail line gains approval -- and critics

California transportation officials have approved the creation of an 8.5-mile light-rail line through South Los Angeles almost to Los Angeles International Airport. But the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor Project is already coming under fire, with residents and some officials urging that much of the line be built underground to cut down on accidents and increase rail speed, a move that would add to the line's $1.7 billion price tag. Construction on the line is slated to begin in 2012 and be completed by 2018.
