Study connects absenteeism and test scores

Missing school has a big effect on student achievement, according to a recent report from the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The report found a higher rate of absenteeism in the month before exams among students with basic scores than among those with top scores. The study also found an increase nationwide in instructional time spent on reading, math, music and visual arts, as well as an increase in homework assigned to middle-school students.
