Crane shortages leaving companies on the ground

This year's hurricanes and the U.S. construction boom have left supplies -- steel, concrete, plywood and plastic pipe -- in tight supply, but now reservations for tower cranes need to be made at least a year in advance. For example, based on estimates from crane suppliers in Seattle, more than 60 cranes will be needed at construction sites by mid-2006, almost triple the normal number.
