Fed assets up on brisk use of facilities by banks

The Federal Reserve's balance sheet topped $2.26 trillion last week as financial institutions tapped into the various programs and utilities that the central bank has set up to fight the credit crisis. The Fed also increased deposits held by banks by $100 billion to $777 billion, partly by making it easier to create new cash to fund loans.
