Piezoelectric crystals transform roads into electricity producers

Researchers from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology plan to road test piezoelectric crystals on a highway in Northern Israel. Piezoelectric materials can harness mechanical stress, such as cars traveling, to create electrical potential. Half a mile of highway with heavy traffic can generate as much electricity as a 400-kilowatt power plant.
