Energy companies praised New York Gov. David Paterson for issuing a narrower moratorium than the state Legislature wanted on natural gas drilling in the state. The moratorium issued by Paterson covers "high-volume hydraulic fracturing of horizontally drilled wells." Paterson vetoed a measure passed by the Legislature to shelve all new drilling permits until May 15. That bill could have affected the operations of more than 300 companies and 5,000 workers, the Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York said.
