"Adware" apps are a headache for Facebook, Google

Applications that allow users to customize their Facebook profiles and Google search-results pages are exposing users to "rogue" advertising, the tech giants say. Services such as PageRage and BuzzDock, which lure in users with promises of faster Web searches or decorative Facebook borders, insert external ads, often for big brands such as Gap and AT&T, into the pages they display without paying revenues to or necessarily abiding by the ad policies of the sites concerned.
