Google's construction of ultra-high-speed broadband service in both Kansas City in Missouri and Kansas carries huge risks for the Internet company, according to a published account of the $1 billion project, one of the most ambitious fiber-based projects ever undertaken -- even though Google has little experience in actually building a network. The risks: Few customers take the service and Google loses a ton of money or poor service stains its brand. At Stanford University, where Google originally tested the service, users praised the speeds but said they were somewhat limited by the overall nature of the Internet.
