Type 1 diabetes patients have lower pancreas mass

The average weight of the pancreas in patients with type 1 diabetes was only 44.9 grams, compared with 81.4 grams in healthy controls, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicated. Researchers also found patients who were single-islet autoantibody positive, but did not have type 1 diabetes, had a mean pancreatic mass of only 61.3 grams, suggesting the organ's mass may serve as a biomarker for diabetes.
