Understanding the public nature of PTIN registration information

The Internal Revenue Service changed its preparer tax identification number registration procedures in response to AICPA and practitioner concerns after third parties obtained PTIN holder information under Freedom of Information Act requests. Practitioners should be aware of what PTIN information is publicly available, what the IRS will not release, and how to change or update their information with the IRS.
