Iowa protein maker plans dairy comeback

Ankeny, Iowa-based Proliant, a maker of protein supplements for humans and animal feed, plans to resume its dairy-related operations with the construction of an 18,000-square-foot processing plant in Melrose, Minn. The plant, which will use cheese byproducts from a nearby plant for its ingredients, will be capable of producing up to 80 million pounds of dry product annually.
