Cloud-computing systems risk facing a crisis in 2010 that will test the viability of doing business through the cloud, according to an annual tech forecast by Strategic News Service CEO Mark Anderson. "It could either be a service-outage-type catastrophe or a security-based catastrophe," he says. "In either case, it will be big enough. It will be the kind of disaster that makes you say, if you're a [chief information officer]: 'That's why I didn't get involved with the cloud.' " Other analysts agree cloud systems will face challenges in 2010, but argue that these events won't affect the popularity of cloud-based computing because users are already well aware of the risks.
