Study ties opioids to side effects in elderly arthritis patients

Researchers said opioids appear to be strongly associated with an increased risk of adverse events among elderly arthritis patients compared with other common painkillers, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and coxibs. However, the researchers said the study, which was based on records of Medicare claims from people treated between 1999 and 2005, "cannot prove causation."
