Column: Southwest Airlines baggage policy weighs on revenue

Although Southwest Airlines' amenity of free checked bags remains popular with consumers, the carrier has less revenue as a consequence of its policy, writes columnist Adam Levine-Weinberg. "Southwest (like the other airlines) needs to support a baggage crew on the ground, but unlike other carriers, has to pay these costs out of the base airfares it charges, instead of baggage fees," he writes.
