Zoo successfully breeds endangered Ozark hellbender

The St. Louis Zoo, along with other conservation organizations, successfully bred 63 Ozark salamanders after a 10-year effort. When they mature, the salamanders will be re-introduced into the wild, where they are an important link in the food chain and sentinels of water quality because they absorb oxygen from the water through their skin.
